Bless This Mess was created to cleanse negativity from your home and everyone living in it, then fill that space back up with abundance, luck, happiness, protection, and all-around good shit.

Because here's the thing about cleansing a home: getting rid of what's unwanted is only half the work.

Once you've cleared out stagnant energy, arguments, stress, bad luck, unwanted visitors, or whatever else has been hanging around, you've made room. Now you get to decide what you're putting there instead.

That's where the blessing comes in.

Use this ritual when moving into a new home, after somebody moves out, following a breakup or difficult period, after an unwanted guest has been in your space, when everyone in the house has been fighting, when your luck has felt like absolute garbage, or anytime your home just feels...off.

You also don't need anything to be wrong.

Blessing your home simply because you love living there and would like good things to continue happening inside of it is a perfectly good reason.

And no, your house does not need to be spotless before you do this ritual. It's called Bless This Mess for a reason.

If you're a seasoned practitioner, take a look anyway. I've included information about working with your kit, techniques for cleansing and blessing your home, and ways to continue the work after your first candle is finished.

Full Ritual Instructions

Before you start the spiritual cleaning, do a little actual cleaning.

I don't mean you need to spend six hours scrubbing your baseboards with a toothbrush. Pick up the trash. Wash the dishes. Open the curtains. Clear some clutter. Sweep or vacuum if you have the energy.

Physical cleaning and spiritual cleaning work beautifully together.

Then open a window or door.

You're about to tell some shit to leave, so give it somewhere to go.

Begin at the back of your home and work toward your front door, cleansing each room as you go.

You can burn the included herbal blend on charcoal or use your preferred method of spiritual cleansing. Incense, smoke, Florida Water, sound, a spiritual wash—use whatever makes sense within your practice and is safe for your household.

As you move through each room, pay attention to corners, closets, doorways, windows, and places where people spend a lot of time.

You don't need an elaborate prayer. Tell the house what you're doing.

Anything harmful, stagnant, crossed, unlucky, or unwanted is leaving this home. Anything that does not belong to me or the people who live here also has got to go.

Feel free to put that into words that actually sound like you.

Continue working toward your front door until you've cleansed the entire home.

Then cleanse yourself.

If other members of your household want to participate, cleanse them too. If they don't, please don't chase your roommate around the apartment with a smoking bundle of herbs. 😂 You can include everyone who lives there in your petition instead.

Once you've finished cleansing, close the door.

Now we change direction.

The first half of the ritual was about getting things out.

The second half is about bringing good things in.

Set up your candle somewhere central in your home. A kitchen or dining table, living room, altar, or another place where your household naturally gathers is perfect.

On your petition paper, write your address.

Underneath it, write the full names of everyone who lives in the home that you want included in the blessing.

Then write what you want this home to hold.

Be specific.

This home is safe and protected. There is always enough money to pay our bills. Our home is filled with laughter, love, good health, good food, good friends, good luck, and opportunities. Everyone who lives here thrives. Only people who mean us well are welcome through this door.

Again, that's an example.

Maybe what your household desperately needs is peace.

Maybe it's money.

Maybe you've just moved and you want to build a happy life there.

Maybe you want your home to become the place where everybody gathers for dinner and somehow stays until midnight.

Write the blessing your house actually needs.

Hold the petition between your hands and picture your home full of life.

See bills getting paid. Food in the kitchen. Friends laughing around the table. Everybody sleeping peacefully. Good news arriving. Opportunities opening. People coming through your door who genuinely love you.

Whatever abundance, luck, and happiness look like in your actual life, picture that.

Next, take your candle and carve your address into the wax.

You can also carve the names of household members or words such as HOME, PEACE, LUCK, MONEY, LOVE, JOY, ABUNDANCE, or PROTECTION.

Apply a small amount of Bless This Mess Ritual Oil to your candle.

Sprinkle a pinch of the herbal blend onto your petition, then lightly roll the dressed candle through the herbs while speaking your blessing aloud.

Place the candle into the included cast iron holder and set it inside a fire-safe bowl or dish.

Fold your petition toward yourself.

Turn it clockwise and fold toward yourself again, continuing until it's small enough to place beneath your candle holder.

We're drawing everything you just asked for into the home.

Place the petition beneath the holder and light your candle.

Let the candle burn completely somewhere safe while you go about enjoying your house.

Cook dinner. Put on music. Have a glass of wine. Watch a movie. Sit on the couch with your dog.

You don't have to stare intensely at a candle for three hours for your spell to know you're serious.

Once the candle has finished burning, leave the petition beneath the holder overnight.

The next day, place the petition somewhere inside your home.

I especially like keeping house-blessing petitions near the front door, tucked somewhere in the kitchen, or placed on a household altar if you have one.

Keep it there as long as you're living in the home or until you're ready to replace it with a fresh blessing.

You can place a tiny amount of oil on the upper corners of your front door or doorframe while asking that good luck, abundance, happiness, and people who mean you well are welcomed into the home.

You can also dress a candle with the oil whenever your household could use a little extra blessing.

And please note the word tiny.

Your front door does not need to look like it lost a fight with a bottle of olive oil. 😂

Ongoing Use

House magic is one of those things I don't think needs to be saved for emergencies.

Your home is where you sleep, eat, recover, make things, love people, cry about stupid shit, celebrate good news, and spend a huge portion of your life.

It deserves a little tending.

Burn some of the herbal blend after you've cleaned the house.

Dress a candle at the beginning of a new month.

Anoint your front door when you feel like your household could use some extra luck.

Repeat the full ritual when you move, after a major life change, or anytime the energy of your home genuinely feels like it needs a reset.

I also love repeating a house blessing around the New Year. Clean everything, get the old year out, and tell the house exactly what you're inviting in next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to use this kit?

Not at all.

Bless This Mess was designed to be easy enough for someone performing their first house blessing while still being useful for experienced practitioners.

Do I need to clean my entire house first?

No.

Please do not turn this into another task you're going to procrastinate for three weeks because you haven't cleaned behind the refrigerator.

Do what you reasonably can.

The important thing is that physical cleaning supports the spiritual work. Even picking up clutter, taking out the trash, opening the windows, and sweeping the floors can make a noticeable difference.

Can I include other people who live with me?

Absolutely.

Write their full names on your petition and include them in the blessing.

You don't need to force anyone else to participate in the ritual.

Can I use this when moving into a new home?

Please do.

Moving into a new home is one of my favorite times to do this ritual.

Cleanse the space before or shortly after moving in, particularly if other people lived there before you. Then perform the blessing for yourself, your household, and the life you intend to build there.

What if I only want to cleanse my home?

You can, but I really recommend following cleansing work with something you want to bring in.

It doesn't need to be elaborate.

After you've removed what's unwanted, bless the space with peace, protection, happiness, abundance, or whatever you'd like taking its place.

Don't just take the trash out. Bring something good home.

Can I use this after an argument or difficult situation?

Absolutely.

You don't necessarily need to repeat the entire ritual.

Cleanse the room where the argument happened, burn a little of the herbal blend, dress a fresh candle, or use the oil to reinforce your household blessing.

And, obviously, if you owe somebody in the house an apology, go do that too.

Magic is wonderful. Communication is also free. 😂

How often can I perform the ritual?

Whenever your home needs it.

Some people like regular household cleansing and blessing work. Others do it when moving, around the New Year, after major life events, or whenever the house starts feeling heavy.

There is no required schedule.

Do I have to use all of the herbs and oil at once?

Please don't!

A little goes a long way. Your kit contains enough herbal blend and ritual oil for up to 30 individual workings when used primarily for candle dressing.

This is your house kit now.

Keep it around. You're going to live there tomorrow too.

Continue the Work
